3 Design Tips to Instantly Elevate Your Space

By Dawn Wojnar

Want to instantly elevate your space and make it a happy place to be in? I have three design tips that can do just that! These tips will change how your home feels, creating a space that is enjoyable and reflective of you.

Hardware

Hardware often gets overlooked with the impact it can make. There are so many different hardware designs, finishes and sizes out there that the choices are really endless. Thus, this is a perfect place to evoke personality and let your “hardware” shine – literally. Whether it is changing out the hardware on an existing furniture piece or your kitchen cabinetry, selecting a design and finish that most resonates with you will have a big impact. The hardware can make a bold statement or fade back to let another element take center stage in the room.

Designer Tip: When measuring for hardware, it should be taken from the center of the existing holes (center-to-center). Overall size/scale of the hardware can make a difference, so this is an important consideration as well when selecting.

Curtains

Curtains are a great way to bring in texture, pattern and color to a space. It also helps to bring the eye up and can make the room feel taller overall. With there being so many different options out there, it can be hard to know if you’re selecting the right one. If your someone that likes simplicity, it is best to go with a curtain that either has a simple pattern or a neutral color. If you want to make a statement, choose a fun design or a bold color to really make those curtains pop!

Designer Tip: The size of the curtain is very important. This is the area where I see people most struggle. Do I only hang the curtain right above the casing? The answer is NO. You want to maximize the height of your room. In order to make the room taller go with the highest height possible. What does this mean? Curtains often come in standard sizes for height unless you’re doing a custom one –  84″, 95″ 108″, 120″.

For instance, if your window is at 83″ high but your ceiling height goes up to 100″, select the 95″ curtain vs. the 84″ one. This will bring the eye up. Also, make sure that you are not skimping on height and having the curtain hang off of the floor – this breaks the line of sight going up. You either want to have the curtain in line with the floor or bellowing on it.

Throw Pillows

Throw pillows can pull everything together! Ever look at a bare sofa with no throw pillows? The words that come to mind for me are lonely and sad. Throw pillows draw you in and make the sofa inviting – you’ll want to stay a while. The choice is yours for pattern, color and texture but you want to layer the pillows. Try not to have all the pillows be the same as to provide variety and interest.

You can see below that design firm STUDIO McGEE did a great job of layering the pillows by providing different heights, widths and mixing of patterns.
